MASCULINITY SO FRAGILE
The fashion industry has always been a space for creativity and self-expression. However, for African men, expressing themselves through fashion can be challenging due to societal expectations of masculinity. The notion of masculinity in many African societies is closely tied to strength, dominance, and control. Any display of perceived weakness, femininity, or nonconformity is often met with ridicule or scorn.
Although society has made strides towards inclusivity and acceptance, the concept of masculinity seems to be stuck in the past, especially in African communities. This rigid definition of masculinity has far-reaching consequences for men who do not fit into the traditional mold. Men who express themselves in non-traditional ways are often ostracized, discriminated against, or even subjected to violence.
The preconceived notion that doing something deemed 'feminine' makes a man less masculine is a flawed and dangerous belief. The practice of masculinity, as it is currently defined, is limiting and constraining, inhibiting the freedom of expression that should be available to all individuals.
